Here’s my pick of the week -enjoy!
That flu is such a swine
So this week and swine flu yet again dominates the news. Firstly in France, where the French Professional League actually called a game off due to players contracting the illness. Why, just cancel the football season over Winter why don’t you and just be done with it. Jeez… (more…)

Howdy fellow footie fans. here’s a few stories doing the rounds over the past few days which took my interest. Hope you enjoy!
Burglar is in Holloway …
Not as in the HM Prison Service, but Ian – Blackpool manager. After his side snatched an undeserved victory against Notts Forest at the City ground, Holloway said;
“I feel like a burglar really. I feel we came here and stole something…. today you saw the unfair side of football. They probably deserved to win, but we’ve ended up nicking it.”
Well, you can give those three points back if you like Ian?…What’s that? No? Thought so. Ian Holloway, funny as……
Time flies when you’re….losing?
So what with all the controversy surrounding exactly why the 6 minutes of extra-time were added to the United/City match, I have decided to clear the matter up for you, once and for all.
It was at Old Trafford.
Good, I’m glad that’s settled then…..
Eejit of the week…..
What was Craig Bellamy thinking? Having just scored what he imagined to be the equalising goal in the Manchester derby, you’d think he’d be at peace with himself. But no….Bellars cannot help himself where trouble is concerned. When a fan made his way onto the pitch, he was duly wrestled to the ground before any harm was done. The stewards had him under complete control. But what did Bellamy do? He walked over to the guy, and slapped him in the face! For no apparent reason other than it was a United fan…..which admittedly might be reason alone for some to want to have a go, but still, it was an unnecessary, stupid thing to do by the Welshman….so nothing out of the norm really.
“Have it…..”
“Probably the best derby of all time….”
No not Carlsberg’s latest advert, but Fergie’s assessment of United’s last gasp victory over their ‘noisy neighbours’. Would he have been saying that at 3-3? Nah, of course not!
County have got no Sol
Sol Campbell was delighted with his debut for new club, Notts County – they lost 2-1. Good to see he’s still aiming for those high standards he set himself, now he’s in League Two hey…
Feeling blue….
Carlo Ancelotti seems to be fitting in well at Chelsea. He’s already mastered the basics – i.e dodging the question. When asked if Tottenham should’ve had a penalty against his Blues side (the answer being an unequivocal yes) Ancelotti said,
“I don’t know if Tottenham should’ve had a penalty, I am not a referee.”
No, but you are a highly qualified, experienced coach who should understand the basic principle of what is and is not a penalty, Carlo. non? And anyway, who said referees know what a penalty is….next time matey, just say you didn’t see it.
Dead and boro’ed by West Brom at the Riverside
After Middlesbrough were trounced 5-0 at home by West Brom, Gareth Southgate remarked on the effect it will have on his side;
“Credit to West Brom….they have hit us with a sledgehammer. It has been a wake-up call.”
You mean, relegation didn’t do that for you Gareth? Sledgehammer? You’ll be needing a rocket up ya…..you catch my drift.
Only one Villan….
What was Nigel Reo-Coker thinking when he confronted Martin O’Neill in training last week? Despite reports they had a punch up, O’Neill insists it was merely a ‘mishap’ as a result of a “strong verbal disagreement.” Not being funny, but would you want to mess with the Irishman? His stare alone is enough to send shivers down your spine (I think it’s the glasses that do it, don’t you?) Of course there was only one winner – Reo-Coker was sent home and ordered not to return to training until Monday. Note for future – do not mess with “Martin the Magnificent” as he is affectionately known as. (Not Martin the Manic as some reports unfairly suggested……)
Macc the knife?
Macclesfield boss, Keith Alexander has insisted on telling everyone that he “is a good manager.”
That may well be, but with one to win to your name; 6 points from 8 games; 23rd in the league; and having just been thrashed 4-1 by Chesterfield, you may have chosen a better time to declare that fella! After al, the evidence is not in you favour.
Lucas – “I’m no Alonso”
Lucas Leiva has said it is unfair to compare him to ex-Liverpool midfielder, Xabi Alonso, and that he is not a direct replacement for the Spaniard in the Liverpool side.
To right mate – Alonso is worth approximately £30 million dollars more than you, can pass a ball with accuracy and has a positive effect on games. Glad you can see it too though…
Madrid in debt? Real-ly??
Real Madrid announced this week that there debt has risen to £296 million following a summer spending spree. Funny that….£80 million on Ronaldo, £59 million on Kaka, approximately £30 million each on Xabi Alonso and Karim Benzema….it’s hardly going to keep you out of the red is it?

That’s all for now – more as they come throughout the week. Until then…

So to Craven Cottage, and Liverpool were looking to go top against Fulham. You could kinda see their intentions; I mean, they struck the woodwork a mere 4 times in the first half. Second half, surprisingly not as much urgency from the Reds, the woodwork was not called into action even once. However, up popped Yossi Benayoun in 93rd minute, to score the winner and spark tremendous celebrations by the players and fans alike. Title race; back on!
Let’s fly to the Emirates now, where Arsenal welcomed back Adebayor and Fabregas after injury, and thanks to both, they beat Man City 2-0. City we know are not the best away; they have lost 12 in all competitions and won only 5, so like I say, not the best, therefore the result was hardly surprising. The little Spaniard assisted the large Togo striker for both his goals; a job well done for the Gunners. Fourth spot looks to be in the bag.
Talk of the toon was of one man at Newcastle today, a certain Alan Shearer (you may have heard of him?) Talk about pressure; 8 games to save the biggest club in the world (or so they would have us believe) from falling into the slums of the Championship (where my team plays…well at the moment anyway.) It did not start well. A comfortable 2-0 defeat by Chelsea leaves Big Al’ with a lot to do. (Still, better than sharing a sofa with the experts that are Alan Hansen and Mark Lawrenson eh?) The Toon were unfortunate not to have scored late on. The linesman failing to see that Owen’s deflected shot was a mere 20 yards over the line…ok 1. But still, it’s like Roy Carroll all over again…)
Youth was the order of the day at Upton Park, where young West Ham starlets Junior Stanislas and James Tomkins grabbed a goal each, to ease past Sunderland, who will be looking nervously over their shoulders at their North-East rivals…(and hoping maybe not to see any Black Cats…they are unlucky for some after all..)
To the Haw-thorn-in-our-own-side…and West Brom again failing to pick up the points at home, against Stoke. The team who finished miles behind them in the Championship last season, but who realise it’s important to play to your strengths and be prepared to win ugly in the Premier league. No great escape this time for the Baggies. Fuller and Beattie giving Stoke their first away win of the season. (just to rub even more salt into Albion’s wounds.
To the Reebok, and Megson’s Bolton pushed Southgate and his team further towards the trap door; a humiliating 4-1 defeat leaving Middlesbrough with Kilimanjaro to climb. They are on their worse away run since the Second World War…I know, alarming but true. Did you know Boro used to have the nickname ‘God’s team?!’ Yeah I know, alarming but true. He’s certainly not giving them a hand now is he? I feel for Gareth, as I like the guy, but fella; the knives are being sharpened, the trap door is open, the noose is being tightened round your neck…well, you get the picture.
At the KC (and the Sunshine band?) Stadium, and Hull City’s poor home form continued; only three wins seen by the fans all season. (maybe they could do with a bit of soul, you know, to funk it up a bit? Joke not funny? Ok then….) Portsmouth had Johnson sent off in the second half, but held on for the point, and in fact were unlucky not to take all three after Hreidarsson’s header struck the woodwork. A draw keeps means both teams are still flirting with the relegation…they’ll be hoping Newcastle and Boro make their moves first.
To Ewood Park, and Blackburn are starting to look out of the e-woods and clear of the trees. Ur..anyway…a late goal by substitute Andre Oooijer meant a vital three points for Big Sam’s men. Keane had given Spurs the lead after a dubious penalty award, but they then had Palacios sent off. Still, Spurs did control the game, and were unlucky to lose. It might have put an end to their ‘aspirations’ of a Europa League spot…yes that’s right the Europa league (a new name doesn’t disguise the fact no-one really takes it seriously though, does it?) Although this is ‘Arry we’re talking about…I think he’ll be glad not to be in the competition next season, seeing’s as he moaned enough about it this season.
Sunday’s action now, and no doubt about the game of the day…Everton v Wigan! I’ve praised Wigan in recent weeks for their performances and position in the table, commenting on what a fantastic job Steve Bruce has done….ur…until now. I fear I may have jinxed them, as the Toffees knocked 4 past the Lactics, in a convincing, one-sided win by Moyes’ men. Jo grabbing himself 2 (how City must wish they had him doing that for them…) and one each for Fellaini and Osman. Great win for the Toffees.
To the other minor insignificant game at Old Trafford (only joking United fans, saving the best till last of course…ahem..) United had to win. Simple as. They didn’t do it the easy way however and fair play to Martin O’ Neill’s side who really took the game to United. Ronaldo put the home side in front, before a headed goal off his Carew-cut head…by…ur, John Carew, drew Villa level. Then Gabby Agbonlahor again bravely headed home, ignoring the fists of Van der Sar in the process. A shock was on…until the 80th minute, when Ronaldo finally showed the class he’s been missing for most of the season, striking a left-footed shot low to Friedel’s left. Signal mayhem and the obligatory 5 minutes of extra time, United pushed forward. Then, in what could be the biggest turning point of the season, some guy no-one has even heard off (I say guy, boy – he’s only 17, and came through the ranks at Lazio…..so a not a local from the academy then?…) Macheda, sealed a precious win for Fergie’s team with a stunning strike. Won at the death…how many times has that happened. Title race is back on and hotting up nicely.
