Delia Smith

Everyone knows who Delia Smith is. If you don’t, shame on you, she is a legend! Though there may be one or two things you don’t know about the Cookery Queen, so I have compiled together some interesting facts, take a look;

Basic facts

Born 18 June 1941, Woking Surrey. She is famous for being a cook, TV presenter and joint majority shareholder of her beloved Norwich City F.C. (also well known for liking the odd tipple and her infamous speech, you know the one, the one which this site is named after…let’s be ‘avin you! Classic. Read more about that later.)

Jobs and TV
Delia tried her hand at hairdresser, shop assistant, travel agent, and waitress as a youngster.
Her first role of note was as cookery writer for the Daily Mirror’s new magazine. (the Deputy Editor Michael Wynn-Jones was later to be her husband.)
In 1972 she started writing in the Evening Standard and then later a column in the Radio Times. delia-cooking-daily-mail5

Her first TV appearance came in the early 1970’s as resident on BBC East’s regional programme Look East. She later approached BBC Further Education with an idea for their first televised cookery course teaching people how to cook. This led to three Cookery Course books.

Most recently, in 2008, she did a series called How to Cheat at Cooking. Her fellow chefs laughed at her, however she was a success and a book followed, selling fasted than hot cakes…boom, boom.

Her love of all things yellow and green……………

It is well known that Delia is a majority shareholding in Norwich City Football Club, along with her husband, and it was them that saved the club from bankruptcy in the late 190’s, investing well over £8 million into their beloved club. Both are season ticket holders and attend every home and away game. A running joke is Delia and Michael live in Suffolk, home to Norwich’s arch rivals Ipswich. Reports suggested Delia once supported Ipswich back in the seventies however she strongly denies this and is yellow through and through.
That Famous Incident……….
On 28 February 2005, Delia attracted the attention of every footie fan world-wide during half-time break of a home match against Manchester City. Norwich were fighting an ultimately unsuccessful battle against relegation from the Premier League, and in an effort to rally the troops, Delia took hold of the microphone (perhaps after a drop of half-time sherry) and relayed the now infamous speech;
“A message for the best football supporters in the world: We need a 12th man here. Where are you? Where are you? Let’s be having you! Come on!” (To check out Delia in action go to: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z_8JLkwzpd0)

It was a moment of madness, passion, drunken foolishness?….whatever your perception it got everybody talking, suddenly everybody knew who Norwich and Delia Smith were. Unfortunately Norwich subsequently lost the match 3-2. Never mind Delia, it was a valiant effort. We still love you for it!

Interesting facts you may not know

A devout Catholic, Delia has written 4 religious books; A Feast for Lent (1983), A Feast for Advent, (1983) A Journey to Prayer, (1986) and a full-length book on prayer, A Journey to God. (1988)

She has been awarded an Honorary degree by Nottingham University, a Fellowship from St Mary’s University College, a Fellowship from the Royal television Society, an Honorary degree from the University of East Anglia and a Fellowship from Liverpool John Moores University. And that is its. So Delia, I salute you. All that is left for me to say is……
